This year, Cliff and I got to celebrate Mother's Day in a very special way. Cliff's mom, Irene, came for a weekend visit!
Because she lives in Nebraska, we only get to see each other a few times a year. Cliff and I took advantage of the beautiful weekend weather and showed Irene two of our favorite places in Maryland.

Last Saturday we drove up to the Mountains for a visit to Cumberland. We strolled around the downtown area window shopping and antiquing before treating ourselves to lunch at The Crabby Pig.
It probably goes without saying that I absolutely adore this community! Part of what makes Cumberland unique is how much the people who live there embrace their history. Running through the center of town is the famed C & O Canal, and right next to it, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
The railway station was built in 1913 and the steam-powered locomotive that runs daily in the summer is from 1916. Railroads have a deep and storied tenure in Nebraska, and continue to play a significant role in Nebraska's economy, so Cliff, Irene and I have a special appreciation for this antique train. We didn't get it to ride it, but Cliff and I made sure Irene got to see it roll through the station at 3 p.m. (For the record, Cliff and I rode the train a few years ago and can't wait to go back!)
