Celebrate | Birthday Weekend (part 1)

I can't believe it. I turn 30 in just a few, short days. I'm told that being in your thirties is great, but I gotta be honest: I'm scared. I kinda feel like a real adult now... ahh!

Part of being an adult is making decisions for yourself. One thing I said I wanted to do more of in 2015 is take weekend getaways, and that's exactly what Cliff and I did to celebrate! We stayed at the Elk Forge Bed and Breakfast in Elkton, Maryland, and had a weekend completely devoted to... us. It was wonderful! Maybe being an adult isn't so bad after all ;)
In addition to seeing some really unique places that are in our own backyard (we were no more than 2 hours away from Silver Spring at any given time!) the trip gave me the opportunity to rediscover my kit lenses. For those unfamiliar, kit lenses are the lenses that sometimes come packaged with DSLR bodies, and in most cases, you can't buy them separately. They're designed to give those unfamiliar with DSLR photography a good introduction to the art. In other words, they're pretty cheap (some high-quality lenses can run you upwards of $3,000!) and the quality isn't the best.

When photographing clients, I stopped using these lenses because I was worried about the end product I'd be producing. It's been a really long time (like, maybe 2 years!) since I photographed anything with a kit lens, so I thought I'd pull them out for this trip. I'm really glad I did!

I may need to rethink my decision about using or not using them with clients. All of the photos shown in this blog post were taken with a kit lens and I gotta say, I think they turned out pretty nice!

We stayed in the County Club Suite, which had fun murals of golfers and swimmers--you know, country club things--on the majority of the walls. We splurged and added on the B&B's romance package. Our stay included a couples massage, rose-pedal turndown service, one dozen roses, chocolates, wine, and a couples gift basket. Included in the basket was a squirrel candle, which we found rather humorous...

We spent one morning of our getaway wandering around the streets of Chesapeake City, which has some really unique architecture. We learned it is the only city in Maryland that is on a working canal. When we crossed the bridge, we even saw a tug boat in action. FYI: folks there are really proud of that bridge!

Can you tell I'm a sucker for the red doors?

We don't have much experience with bays, estuaries, oceans, canals, or any kind of large bodies of water, so seeing the ice here was actually really interesting.

We spent our afternoon in a place that's very special. I don't want to give too much away, because it really is deserving of it's own blog post, so here's a quick preview. To be continued...
